Why a Lizard Skins grip?

The grip that comes on a new bat is usually the cheapest part of it — a thin synthetic wrap picked for cost, not feel. It gets slick when your hands sweat, packs down flat in a few weeks, and does nothing about the sting on a mishit. Swapping it for a Lizard Skins DSP Ultra is the biggest upgrade you can make to a bat for under $25, and it’s why you’ll see them on bats from Little League through the big leagues.

It stays tacky, wet or dry

DSP stands for Durable Soft Polymer. It has a slightly tacky surface, an oval pattern and multi-directional ridges that hold your hands in place through the swing whether it’s a humid July doubleheader or a wet April morning. Because the bat isn’t sliding, hitters stop death-gripping the handle — looser hands, quicker bat.

It takes the sting out

The polymer absorbs vibration on off-barrel contact instead of sending it into your hands. The thicker the grip, the more it dampens: 1.8 mm is the most cushion, 1.1 mm is the all-around favorite and our best seller, and 0.5 mm is the pro choice for wood bats when you want to feel everything.

It lasts

The reformulated DSP holds its texture season after season, and the premium adhesive keeps it locked to the handle instead of creeping or unraveling like a worn stock wrap. Every roll is 990 mm / 39 in with pre-cut ends and a finishing strip, and it fits wood, composite or aluminum.

It looks like your bat

80+ colorways — solids, camo, Outburst, patriotic, MLB team colors. Match your uniform or make your bat impossible to mix up in the dugout.

Five-minute install

On-grip markings show exactly where to start and stop. Peel the old grip, wrap the new one, tape the finish — no tools. Watch the install video.

CheapBats.com was the very first Lizard Skins dealer — our founder met theirs at a trade show, tried the grip, and we’ve carried it ever since. We still think it’s the best grip on the market.

A pro-shape maple bat at a batting-practice price

Rawlings Adirondack 271 Hard Maple Wood Baseball Bat R271MB

Description

The 271 is the turn model most hitters picture when they think of a wood bat: a medium 2.56" barrel, a 15/16" handle and a traditional knob, with weight spread evenly enough that it works for a contact hitter and still carries plenty of barrel for the guys who want to drive the ball. Rawlings cuts the R271MB from hard maple, which is why it has that dense, sharp crack at contact instead of the softer sound of ash — and why the barrel face stays hard through a long season of cage work.

This is the bat in Rawlings' Adirondack line, the value wood series that puts professional profiles in a bat priced for everyday use. That makes it the right pick for wood-bat leagues, fall ball, tee work and any hitter who wants to learn what a real barrel feels like without spending pro-stock money. Like every wood bat, it carries no manufacturer warranty.

This bat is part of the Adirondack line; shop the rest of our Rawlings wood bats, everything on the Rawlings baseball bats page, or compare across brands — see all wood bats. Youth sizes live on the youth wood bats page.

Hard Maple

Dense, close-grained wood that gives a firm barrel face and a loud, clean crack at contact.

271 Turning Model

Medium 2.56" barrel with a 15/16" handle — the classic balanced profile, so it swings quick but still has barrel to work with.

Adirondack Series

Professional turning models in a value-priced wood bat.

No Manufacturer Warranty

Wood bats are sold as-is; that is true of every brand, not just Rawlings.

Who This Bat Is Built For

Hitters who want a true pro-profile maple bat for wood-bat leagues, batting practice and cage work without paying pro-stock prices.

Best for:

  • Wood-bat league and fall-ball players who want the standard 271 feel in hard maple
  • Cage work and tee work — maple's stiff barrel gives honest feedback on where you hit the ball
  • Hitters moving from metal to wood who need a proven, balanced first turn model

Consider a different bat if:

  • You want a bigger barrel and a thinner handle at an even lower price — the Adirondack 212 black ash is the same value line in ash
  • You want pro-grade, ink-dot-graded wood — see our wood bats for Pro Reserve and pro-label models

FAQ

Does a wood bat have a warranty?

No — wood bats carry no breakage warranty from any manufacturer, including this one. Hitting with the label up or down (grain facing the pitcher) and avoiding cage balls in cold weather is the best protection.

Maple, ash or birch?

Maple is the hardest and densest — the most pop and the most popular, but it can shatter on a bad mishit. Ash is lighter with more flex and the traditional feel; it flakes rather than snaps. Birch sits between the two: nearly as hard as maple with some of ash's flex, and it gets harder as you hit with it.

What size should I get?

Wood bats are sized by length; the 271 runs roughly a -2 to -3 drop by feel. Most high-school and adult hitters swing a 32" or 33"; if you are coming off a -3 BBCOR, start with the same length you swing in metal.
