Pro Preferred is the top of the Rawlings line: the same 200, 204, 205, 314, 315 and 3039 patterns as Heart of the Hide, cut from kip leather instead of steerhide. Kip is lighter, tighter-grained and breaks in in about half the time, and the Pittards sheepskin palm lining wicks sweat and keeps the glove from stiffening between games. This is the glove Rawlings builds for its advisory players.

We stock the infield patterns from 11.5" to 12", the 12.75" outfield, the catcher's mitts, and the color-matched Pro Label releases, in right hand throw and, where Rawlings makes it, left hand throw. Prices run from just under $330 to $419.99.

Kip leather vs. steerhide

Kip comes from younger cattle: a finer grain, less weight, and a softer feel from the first catch. It breaks in faster than Heart of the Hide and stays supple longer between uses. Steerhide is heavier and stiffer, and holds a pocket shape a little more stubbornly once it is set. Both last a decade if you condition them; the difference is feel and weight, not durability.

College and high-level high school players who field every day and want the lightest pro glove; adult players who want a glove that is ready in two weeks instead of four; and anyone who has worn out a Heart of the Hide and wants the upgrade.

Sizing is the same as Heart of the Hide: 11.5" to 11.75" infield, 12" pitcher and utility, 12.75" outfield, 33" to 34" catcher's mitts.
