What makes a fastpitch glove different

A fastpitch glove is not a baseball glove in a different color. The pocket is deeper and wider to hold a 12" ball, the finger stalls are narrower and the wrist opening smaller for a woman's hand, and the patterns run a half-inch to an inch bigger than the equivalent baseball position. A baseball glove will work in a pinch, but the ball sits high in the pocket and pops out on hard throws.

Size by position

  • Infield: 11.75" to 12.25". Second and short go smaller; third base 12" to 12.5".
  • Outfield: 12.5" to 13" with a deep pocket and H-web.
  • Pitcher: 12" to 12.5", closed web.
  • Utility: 12.5" with a basket or modified trap web.
  • Youth (8 to 11): 11" to 12" with a smaller hand opening (Mizuno Prospect Finch, Easton Ghost Flex, Rawlings Sure Catch).
  • Catcher: 33" to 34" mitt. First base: 13" mitt.

The lines

Rawlings Liberty Advanced is the standard in travel and college ball, a pro-grade steerhide glove with a break-in that takes a week or two; the ColorSync editions are the same glove in seasonal colors. Heart of the Hide fastpitch patterns are the stiffest and most durable. R9 and Shut Out are Rawlings' softer, game-ready lines for high school and rec players. Marucci Cypress is Marucci's kip-leather pro glove; Oxbow, Ascension and Palmetto are its mid-grade lines; Magnolia and Acadia are for younger players. Mizuno Pro Select and Prime Elite are pro-grade; MVP Prime is the value pick. Easton Professional Collection is pro-grade, Ghost NX is mid-grade, Fundamental is entry-level. All Star Heiress is the fastpitch catcher's mitt to beat.

Frequently asked questions

Can my daughter use a baseball glove for softball? She can, but a fastpitch glove fits the ball and her hand better. If she is playing more than a season, buy the right glove.

What size for a 10-year-old? 11.5" to 12". For an 8-year-old, 11" to 11.5".

How long is the break-in on a Liberty Advanced? One to two weeks of daily catch. Work the pocket with a ball and a little conditioner; skip the oven.

Left hand throw? Yes, wherever Rawlings, Marucci, Mizuno or Easton makes one. It is a separate option in the listing.
