First Base Gloves

Why a mitt and not a glove: a first base mitt has no individual fingers, a longer profile and a deep, padded pocket, so a throw in the dirt sticks instead of popping out. The rules allow it only at first base and behind the plate.

Sizing: 12.5" is the standard adult baseball size and 13" is for players who want maximum reach; fastpitch mitts are 13" for the bigger ball. A youth player under 12 is better served by an 11.5" or 12" mitt they can close.

Break-in: pro mitts (Heart of the Hide, Pro Preferred, Cypress) need a couple of weeks of catch to soften the hinge. Mid-grade and youth mitts (Renegade, Sandlot, Prospect, MVP Prime) are game-ready.
