Sure Catch is Rawlings' glove for the 6 to 10 age band, where an easy close beats every other spec. The heel cutout in the palm lets the glove fold with less hand strength, the all-leather shell holds its pocket all season, and a cushioned finger lining plus a Velcro wrist strap keep it comfortable and snug on a small hand. Player editions carry the styling of Mike Trout, Kris Bryant and other MLB stars.

Sizes run 10" to 11.5" for baseball in basket, Pro I and Pro H webs, with 12" and 12.5" fastpitch softball models. Fits are Youth Pro Taper or adjustable depending on the model. Prices run from about $33 to $51.

Why the heel cutout matters

A young player's biggest problem is not catching the ball; it is closing the glove around it. Sure Catch removes material at the heel so the glove hinges with less squeeze, and the all-leather shell (rather than vinyl) means the pocket that forms stays formed. What size does a 6 to 8 year old need? 10" to 10.5" for most tee ball and coach-pitch players. Move to 11" or 11.5" around 9 to 10, or earlier for outfielders.

Is the Sure Catch real leather? Yes. The shell is leather on every model, from the soft leather shells to the full-grain leather versions.

Are the player-signature gloves different? Only in styling. The Mike Trout and Kris Bryant editions use the same Sure Catch construction with the player's colorway and logo.
